Advanced Speaking Skills Workshop

This workshop is designed for people with some experience of speaking in public, who want to do even better. Maybe you have seen other speakers perform seemingly effortlessly, or really connect to their audience, or entertain at the same time as they deliver a serious business message, and what to know how to do it. This 2-day workshop will teach you all this and take your speaking skills to the next level.

Numbers are deliberately restricted to no more than six people, which makes them highly interactive and also gives you the opportunity to make several presentations without having to listen to dozens of others making theirs. All of your presentations will be videoed, which helps us give you effective feedback and you to make a comparison of your performance at the beginning and end of the workshop.

Each delegate is asked to prepare two, 5-10 minute presentations before the workshop. The first should be a 'typical' work-related presentation (i.e. the type of thing you might be expected to present on in your job role) whilst the second can be on any subject at all.

There will be some 'homework' on the evening of day 1 where you will be asked to revise the second of these presentation in the light of what you have learned so far.

Workshop Outline

Day 1 - Morning

The workshop begins at 09'00. After self-introductions to warm everybody up, we will ask you to identify your natural speaking style and then deliver a 10 minute presentation you have prepared beforehand. This is to give us a benchmark against which to measure your improvements over the two days.

We will then discuss body language and how to use it to underline the message you are trying to deliver. You'll not only learn how to project a confident, powerful image, but also how to use specific gestures to communicate feelings and emotions such as sincerity, warmth, disbelief, determination, etc.

After coffee we'll look at how to use your voice effectively. Most of us only use a fraction of the range our voice is capable of. We'll show you how to vary its pitch, rhythm, volume, speed and intonation to make your vocal delivery both easier and more enjoyable to listen to.

Day 1 - Afternoon

After lunch we'll first look at how to structure a presentation or speech so that it has a logical flow that is both easy to understand and follow.

Then we'll look at how to 'grab 'em by the throat' - i.e. how to open a speech or presentation in a way that grabs your audience's attention and compels them to listen to you.

Day 1 finishes about 16.00 in order to give you time to revise your second pre-prepared presentation given the lessons you have learned during the day.

Day 2 - Morning

We begin day 2 with delegates making their second (now revised and hopefully improved!) pre-prepared 5-10 minute presentation. Each delegate will receive feedback from both the trainers and the rest of the group.

Having covered the opening on day 1, we now look at how to 'close with a bang'. We'll look at the predictable, boring ways most speakers wrap up their presentations, and give you a number of far more powerful, effective alternatives

Day 2 - Afternoon

After lunch we look at how to use rehtoric to sear your words into your audience's minds. But before you start to panic, this isn't an attempt to make you sound theatrical. We'll simply show you how to use powerful, effective techniques used by great speakers such as Churchill, Martin Luther King and JFK to make your message more memorable whilst still using everyday language you are comfortable with.

You'll then be given an opportunity to rewrite the first presentation you delivered at the beginning of day 1using some of these rhetorical techniques, before delivering it again. Both the trainers and the rest of the group will compare it with the first delivery and give constructive feedback, concentrating on the changes that have been made.

Finally you'll be asked to assess the progress you think you've made and identify the main things you have learned, before critiquing the workshop as a whole.
